What Are Long Vowel Sounds?

Long vowel sounds are vowels that say their own names.

  • A says /ā/ as in cake

  • E says /ē/ as in tree

  • I says /ī/ as in bike

  • O says /ō/ as in home

  • U says /yoo/ or /oo/ as in cube or flute

1. Long A (/ā/)

Examples:

  • cake
