What Are Short Vowel Sounds?

The English alphabet has 5 vowels:
A, E, I, O, U

Each vowel has a short sound and a long sound. Today we will learn the short vowel sounds.

The short vowel sounds are:

  • a = /ă/ as in apple

  • e = /ĕ/ as in egg

  • i = /ĭ/ as in insect

  • o = /ŏ/ as in octopus

  • u = /ŭ/ as in umbrella

1. Short A (/ă/)

/ă/ – "a" as in apple
